What a Google Partner Badge Means (and Why Your Agency Should Have One)

Ask ten agencies whether they know Google Ads and ten will say yes. Marketing is full of claims that are impossible to check from the outside, which is exactly why the few you can actually verify are worth paying attention to.

A Google Partner badge is one of those. It is a status Google awards to advertising agencies that meet a set of published requirements, and unlike a testimonial or a bold promise on a homepage, anyone can confirm it in seconds.

So here is what the badge actually signifies, what an agency has to do to earn it, and why it is worth insisting on when you decide who runs your advertising. We will also be honest about what it does not tell you, because that matters just as much.

What is a Google Partner badge?

A Google Partner badge is a credential Google gives to advertising agencies and marketing companies that manage Google Ads to a required standard. It confirms the company has certified staff, manages a meaningful amount of ad spend, and keeps its accounts performing to Google’s own benchmarks.

The badge lives inside the Google Partners Program, which runs through a Google Ads manager account. Companies that qualify can display the badge on their website and marketing, and they appear in the public Google Partner Directory. That directory is the important part: it means the claim is not just a logo an agency pasted onto their site, it is a status you can look up.

There are two tiers. Standard Google Partner, and Premier Partner, which is reserved for roughly the top 3% of Partners in each country and reassessed every year.

What does an agency have to do to earn it?

This is where the badge earns its meaning. To hold Google Partner status, a company has to meet three requirements at the same time, across its manager account.

1. Certification. At least 50% of the account strategists working in the account must hold a current Google Ads certification, and those certifications have to cover the products the company actually spends on. In other words, real people on the team have passed Google’s exams, not just the person who set the account up years ago.

2. Ad spend. The account has to manage at least USD $10,000 (roughly NZD $17,000) in ad spend over a rolling 90-day period. This filters out companies that dabble. A Partner is actively running campaigns with real budgets, not managing one small account on the side.

3. Performance. The account has to maintain an optimisation score of at least 70%. Optimisation score is Google’s own measure of how well an account is set up and managed against best practice. It is not a perfect proxy for results, but it does show the agency keeps its accounts tuned rather than setting and forgetting.

Miss any one of these and the badge is withdrawn. That matters: it is not a certificate you earn once and keep forever. It is an ongoing status that reflects how the agency is performing right now.

Partner vs Premier Partner

Premier Partner is the same idea with a higher bar. Google caps it at the top 3% of Partners in each country and re-ranks every year, weighing things like client growth, retention, spend under management and how well the agency uses the range of Google products. If a standard badge says “meets the standard”, Premier says “among the strongest in the country”.

Why it matters when you are choosing an agency

You are trusting an agency with a real budget and your growth. The badge gives you a few things that are otherwise hard to get.

It is verified, not self-declared. Anyone can write “Google Ads experts” on a website. The badge is the difference between a claim and a credential Google itself stands behind.

It proves current, active expertise. Because the badge depends on live spend and a rolling performance score, it tells you the agency is working in Google Ads every day, right now. It is not evidence that someone did a course back in 2019.

It comes with a direct line to Google. Partners get access to dedicated support, product betas and training that non-Partners do not. When something breaks in your account, or a new feature could help you, that access can genuinely matter.

You can check it yourself. A real badge links to the agency’s listing in the Google Partner Directory, so you never have to take their word for it.

The honest part: a badge is a floor, not a ceiling

Here is what most articles on this topic will not tell you. A Google Partner badge proves competence and activity. It does not prove the agency will get you results, communicate well, or treat your account like it matters.

The spend requirement is measured across every account an agency manages, not yours. The optimisation score reflects Google’s best-practice settings, not whether the leads coming through are any good. Plenty of badged agencies still lock clients into long contracts, report on vanity metrics, and follow up slowly. The badge does not screen for any of that.

So treat it as a baseline, a way to filter out the genuine amateurs before you look closer. Then apply the checks that actually predict a good experience: real proof from businesses like yours, transparency on cost and performance, fast follow-up on leads, and fair contract terms. We cover the traps to watch for in red flags when hiring a marketing agency, and the exact questions to put to a shortlist in questions to ask before hiring a lead generation company.

A badge and a guarantee together tell you far more than either alone.

How to check an agency’s Google Partner status

It takes about a minute.

  • Look for the badge on their website, then click it. A real badge links through to the company’s profile in the Google Partner Directory.
  • If it does not link anywhere, or it is just a static image, be sceptical. Ask them for their Partner Directory listing directly.
  • Check the tier while you are there. The listing shows whether they are a Partner or a Premier Partner.
  • Cross-check the certifications. A Partner should be happy to tell you who on the team is certified and in what.

If an agency gets awkward when you ask to verify a credential they are advertising, that tells you something in itself. You can read Google’s own explanation of the programme and its requirements on the Google Partners help page.

Where we stand

We are a certified Google Partner, so we clear that bar. But it is not the thing we ask you to judge us on.

The badge is our floor. What we actually stake our name on is the result: 30 qualified leads in your first 30 days, or you get 100% of your money back, written into a legal contract. That is a promise the badge does not require us to make, and one most agencies will not.

If you want to see how that works in practice, how it works walks through the full process, and our paid ads page lays out how we run campaigns. Better yet, book a call and we will show you the numbers. Hold us to the badge, then hold us to the guarantee.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to become a Google Partner? Nothing. There is no fee to join the Google Partners Program. The cost is in meeting the requirements: certified staff, at least USD $10,000 in managed ad spend over 90 days, and an optimisation score of 70% or higher.

How hard is it to become a Google Partner? For an agency that runs Google Ads full time, the badge is achievable but not automatic. The spend and certification bars are straightforward for an active agency. Holding the 70% optimisation score month after month takes ongoing, hands-on account management, which is the whole point of it.

Is a Google Partner the same as being Google certified? No. A Google Ads certification is an individual qualification a person earns by passing an exam. A Google Partner badge is a company-level status that requires certified people, a spend threshold and a performance score all at once. One person being certified does not make a company a Partner.

Does a Google Partner badge guarantee results? No, and any agency that implies it does is overselling. The badge confirms competence and active experience. It says nothing about whether the leads will be good or whether the agency will look after you. Judge results on real proof and, ideally, a guarantee.

How do I verify an agency’s badge is real? Click the badge on their site. A genuine one links to their listing in the Google Partner Directory. If it does not link anywhere, ask them for their directory profile. A real Partner can produce it immediately.
